Video: Jazmine Sullivan- Need U Bad

Not since Jennifer Hudson have I heard a singer with as much natural vocal talent and maturity in their voice as Jazmine Sullivan. I’ve been following Jazmine Sullivan on ConcreteLoop.com and YouTube for a while now, and while I was impressed with her vocals on “Need U Bad”, I have to admit that she got my full attention and admiration when I saw the live rendition of “In Love With Another Man” that she did for Seventeen Magazine. This lady can sing, and if you haven’t heard of her yet, well allow me to be the first to introduce you to Jazmine Sullivan.

20 year old singer/songwriter Jazmine Sullivan’s “Need U Bad” has been receiving non-stop airplay in the blogosphere for many months now, and has just over the last few weeks hit major video networks like BET. Jazmine’s raspy vocals and passionate lyrics coupled with the reggae vibe on the single, “Need U Bad” have already drawn comparisons between her, and everyone’s favorite hip hop queen, Lauryn Hill.

Jazmine officially entered the music scene when she appeared on Showtime at the Apollo at age 11, where she sang “Accept What God Allows” (you can watch it here). This appearance was just the beginning for the Philadelphia native, who later began performing around her hometown with neo-soul artists like Jill Scott, Floetry, and Musiq. Eventually she was signed to Jive Records and began work on what would have become her debut album, with help from producers Cool & Dre, Timbaland, and long-time friend Missy Elliot.

Early last year, Jazmine was signed to J Records, home to Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson, Fantasia, and the Queen herself, Aretha Franklin; after record executives failed to effectively market her mature sound to a younger audience at Jive. In between inking her record deal with J Records and leaving Jive, Jazmine sang background on Fantasia’s multi-platinum debut album, “Free Yourself” and also penned the Christina Milian hit, “Say I”.  I’m expecting and hoping for big things for Ms. Sullivan, and judging by her talents I’m sure she’ll get them.  Jazmine Sullivan’s debut album, “Fearless” hits stores September 23rd.

P.S. Still not a fan of the “pseudo-patois” (on “Need U Bad”) but I’ll let it slide…this time. :)
