Updated*-50th Grammy Awards Nominees for Best Reggae Album

Well today is the day that the Recording Academy announces their nominations for the 2008 Grammy Awards. The Grammy’s are considered the creme de la creme of American music awards. There were 56 entries for Best Reggae Album of the Year including albums by Assassin, Anthony B, Burning Spear, Collie Buddz, Da’Ville, Lady Saw, Mr. Vegas, Mavado, Tarru Riley, Sizzla, Sly & Robbie, Wayne Wonder and more.

I’m not holding my breath that there will be any great surprises in this category, historically this category has normally been a disappoint to me. I think reggae should have at least two awards, I don’t think you should have dancehall, ska, and all the other forms of reggae music lumped together. In my opinion I think it marginalizes the diversity of reggae and it’s just not fair to the artists. However, I’m not a member of The Academy so my vote doesn’t count, but honestly how many people in the Academy actually listen to reggae on a regular basis (not-to-mention dancehall), if at all? Never-the-less, I’ll let you know who the nominees are later on today.
