Tribute to Herb McKenley/Videos-The history of Jamaican sprinters through the years

I’d been reserving this post but I think with the death of Herb McKenley on yesterday it would be a befitting tribute to his legacy. McKenley, an accomplished sprinter, won three medals at the 1951 Pan American games, was a member of Jamaica’s 1952 Olympic winning mile relay team, and was even bestowed with the Order of Merit award by the Jamaican government. For even more information on his life and death you can click here or here and watch the first video below where his skills were highlighted as well.
If you love Jamaican track and field then you should really watch the videos, each are only 5 minutes. Narrated by Linford Christie, the videos span 1948-2002, pre Asafa Powell.
Athletes featured in the video are McKenley, Donovan Bailey, Michael Blackwood, Lenox Miller, Don Quarrie, Deon Hemmings, Sandie Richards, and more.
I dedicate this post to all the “Yawd” athletes who make track meets like the Texas and Penn Relays and the Olympics must-see events. Big up and much respect!

I love the videos. I ran track and field when I was in Jamaica. Some of my classmates made it to the Penn Relay status. I got bored in 4th form (11th grade) and decided to persue drama.
However I remember out P.E. teacher speaking of Herb Mckenley, as well as Quarry and all the greats.
BIG UP to Herb and all his accomplishments.
I threw the shotput in middle school, that’s about as track-oriented as I got. I just couldn’t give up soda and junk food! LOL!
