The truth about the Mavado Real McKoy Sneaker by Nike

In the process of reading my normal blogs and websites this morning, I was surprised to see that there is a recurring rumor in the dance hall blogosphere about Mavado partnering with Nike on a sneaker called The Real McKoy (you can check it out here), so of course I followed the link and checked it out myself. I must admit that I liked the shoe, I personally wouldn’t buy it just because I don’t like to wear sneakers unless I’m working out or plan to do a lot of walking, and not-to-mention that those colors are not going to match too much other than my, “I love JA” wardrobe.

After reading all the comments from readers across the web doubting the validity of the shoe, and with me being the investigator I am, I just had to get to the bottom of it, besides I just wanted to see for myself the confirmation that shoe giant Nike had partnered with reggae’s “gangsta for life”, especially in light of all of the “political correctness” that is going on in dance hall right now. So, I decide to go to Nike.com and search, and I search some more and I come up with nada….hmmm…so what do I do next? That’s right, I called Nike Headquarters and after getting transfered a couple of times, I spoke with a product specialist who informed me that there are no Real McKoy sneakers and that the shoes in question were simply customized (or should she have said promotional?…see the update below)…so for all you fans that are expecting to find these on the shelf somewhere, I’m sorry but you’ll have to hit up nikeid.nike.com and customize your own pair (or get as close as you can), and be prepared to wait about a month for them to be delivered, and even longer than that if you don’t live in the US.

Update*- You can read more about the “Real McKoy” Nike’s here, the shoes are part of a promotion that Nike is doing for the 2008 Olympics, but as I stated previously there are no “Real McKoy’’s” for sale. :( You can also view Asafa Powell’s promotional Nike here.

Just a lil more info for u… I heard Mavado actually talk about these shoes in his interview… And there’s only 4 pairs made, and they aren’t just customized… The dunks were actually made for Mavado, Asafa Powell, and two of their promoters, and they will be the only ones to have these shoes… Its to promote the Jamaican takeover, well actually the Dancehall scene and the Olympics, but meh…
