Reggae Month & The Reggae Academy Awards

Email Tremaya | All posts by Tremaya

Next month will be yet another historic moment in time for reggae both in Jamaica, and around the world as well. Not only has February been officially declared by the government of Jamaica as Reggae Month, but the first ever Reggae Academy Awards will take place in Kingston on February 24th. Beginning on February 6th with the Bob Marley Birthday Dinner, Reggae Month will be filled with events ranging from a soccer match featuring The Reggae Boyz vs Costa Rica, the Africa Unite-Smile Jamaica concert, a reggae conference at UWI, and of course the Reggae Academy Awards.

Established by the Recording Industry Association of Jamaica last year, The Reggae Academy Awards will “recognize and celebrate excellence in the work of creative and technical persons in the local and international Reggae music communities such as producers, songwriters, vocalists, engineers and music video directors”. Currently, there are approximately 32 categories as well as a Living Legend and Posthumous Legend Award. As with the US Grammy Awards you have to be a member of the Academy to vote, but there are two categories in which the public will be allowed to cast their votes and those are: Most Popular Song and Most Popular Artist.

For more information on the Reggae Academy Awards and to cast your vote, visit reggaeacademy.com. You can also visit them at myspace.com/reggaeacademy.
