Rastafarians Gather on Rosalie Avenue- This Day In Jamaican History
It was on this day October 5, in 1959 when thousands of Rastafarians (as well as others) flocked to 78 Rosalie Avenue in Kingston to leave for Africa after receiving a “passport” (which really was a ticket they were sold) by Rev C.V. Henry. Upon seeing the masses and having no real plan Henry kept delaying the deployment. Henry later stated the event was not meant to be a literal exodus. The repatriation never occurred, and as a result many were left homeless and hopeless and Henry was ultimately jailed.
