OK, yeah I’ve been MIA!

Hey everyone I’m back for real this time. It’s been a crazy couple of weeks, I’ve been busy building 4 websites on Wordpress, this one of course, my copywriting site LonelyIslandCopywriting.com, AllOverJamaica.com ( a site about things to see and places to go in Jamaica), and my personal one, Tremaya.com. I’m not sure if I’m going to commit long term to my personal one, I think blogging about myself is boring, I tried it before and quit real quick, so I’m not convinced this time will be too different. :)

Why did I switch from Blogger? I never intended to land on Blogger to begin with, I wanted a website but just starting out I didn’t know the first thing about building a website, HTML, or hosting so I thought I’d go with Wordpress….that was until I got to the part about having to edit my header image and I spent 2 hours just trying to figure that part out. OK, so let’s scratch that idea…..I headed right on over to Blogger and was set up in about an hour, only problem I noticed immediately was when I was looking for templates, all the nice ones were for Wordpress! Dang it! So, I immediately had to learn enough HTML to set my blog apart from the others, at least color wise anyway.

Blogger is good if you are a) a newbie, like I was, b) don’t really want to monetize your site, c)don’t have time a lot of time, d)don’t care that “blogspot” is part of your site name. Another reason I switched is because I wanted a sense of uninhibited freedom but at the same time be able to get help if I needed it. We’ve all heard the horror stories about people’s blogs disappearing or being accidentally deleted or suspended by Blogger. I didn’t want to go through it and I knew if my blog disappeared I would be on my own, just check out the response time at the Bloggger forums. At least in this situation I have Wordpress and Hostgator to go to in case of emergencies and they provide me with the capability of backing up my site.

I always intended to have my own place in this wide web world, which is why I purchased my domain name and “pointed” it towards Blogger, which was one of the smartest things I could have done because it saved me a lot of work when I transfered. For example whenever I link to another site or blog directory I always referenced YawdFromAbroad.com and not YawdFromAbroad.blogspot.com, so now that I am on Wordpress I didn’t have to go back and re-register under YawdFromAbroad.com. I’m not going to lie to you, if you are not technically inclined Wordpress is not going to be easy immediately, it is quite more complex than Blogger, at least in the beginning. You have to deal with hosting (unless you want to join Wordpress.com (which leaves wordpress.com as a part of your domain name) instead of Wordpress.org), templates and customizing those if you are insatiable, like I am. You also have to add plug-ins which are THE BEST thing about Wordpress as well as widgets.

Anyway, I won’t bore you any longer with my synopsis but I like Wordpress, I don’t completely understand everything yet but I’m getting there, if you are thinking about moving I say do it. I host all 4 of my blogs on Wordpress for just $7.95/month through Hostgator. I think Wordpress looks better, is more reputable, and over all is just more professional than Blogger, but I wouldn’t have understood as much as I do about blogging without Blogger, so for that I am grateful…not-to-mention it was free! LOL! Anyway, I’m back so let’s get back to the business at hand….JAMAICA!
