John Crow’s Devil & The Girl With The Golden Shoes

I’m going to be reading John Crow’s Devil and The Girl With The Golden Shoes while I’m on vacation the next couple of weeks, both authors are Jamaican and highly acclaimed. I would normally finish books of this size in about a week combined with all my other responsibilities but since I’ll be living it up I’ll probably be stretching it out for the full two weeks. I’ve started both books but have yet to finish them. I purchased them a few months back but haven’t really dedicated my full attention to them because I suffer from a touch of pseudo A.D.D. and I have a 2-year old. LOL!

John Crow’s Devil is Marlon James’ first novel and will be the first book that I’ve read by him so I’m really excited to be discovering a new (Jamaican) author. Colin Channer is such a good writer. I count his Waiting In Vain as one of my all-time favorites (ladies you must read that one). Most of Channer’s works are set in Jamaica and have strong and sensual male characters and most importantly a very intriguing story line. I highly suggest his works, which must explain why my copy of Waiting In Vain is missing!

If anyone has read either John Crow’s Devil or The Girl With The Golden Shoes or any of either author’s works I’d love to hear what you thought of them. I’ll do my own reviews in a few weeks when I return. I haven’t done a review since Christopher Farley’s Before The Legend: The Rise of Bob Marley, partially because I recently finished the 900+page Pillars of The Earth (it was good too!) and blogging can take on a life all it’s own…(and don’t forget the A.D.D. and the 2-year old). :)

You can visit Marlon James at Marlon-James.blogspot.com and Colin Channer at ColinChanner.com

P.S. Any Jamaican authors out there you find outstanding?? Let me know!!!

I read John Crow’s Devil and thoroughly enjoyed it. It takes a while to get into, but once you do you won’t want to put it down. Thanks for the heads up on the Channer novel, I am definitely going to check that one out.

p.s. You’re welcome! (I gave you the head’s up on Condi—yes I am a lurker, but I do enjoy your blog. Keep up the good work!)

Anonymous,
Thanks again so much for the “Condi Correction”. LOL! I really appreciate it. Yeah, I started John Crow’s Devil and realized that it wasn’t run of the mill at all, so I’m looking forward to really digging in to it. Colin is really good to me and I think that you will really enjoy his work, if for no other reason than that he really captures the “feel” of Jamaica and human emotions in his writing.

P.S. You can lurk as long as you like. Lurkers are actually the people who make the blogosphere go’round! :)
