Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt is the fastest man in the world!!

Jamaican runner, Usain Bolt is the fastest man in the world! The 6′4″, 21-year old set a new world record of 9.72 seconds, last night in New York at the Reebok Grand Prix at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island. The meet was reported to have been abuzz all night and felt like “Jamaica Night” with the overwhelming number of Jamaican fans who turned out to support Bolt. The Jamaican national anthem was even sung during a rain delay and reportedly the Jamaican fans went wild.

Bolt who had previously only run the 100 meters four times (he normally runs the 200 meters), says he only began to run the 100 meters for speed practice and to improve his starts. This new “practice” plan landed him the second fastest time in history earlier last month, when he ran 9.76 in the 100 meters, which at the time was only .02 seconds off the former world-record holder Asafa Powell’s, 9.74.

The stage is now set for Asafa and Usain to meet during the Jamaican National Championships which will be held in Kingston, on June 27th-29th. After his win last night, Usain stated that, “I’m definitely doubling up”, referring to his running both the 200 and 100 meters in the future, although he has not made any guarantees about running the 100 at the Beijing Olympics later this year. Bolt is quoted as saying last month, “The gold medal is more important to me,” “Somebody’s got to wait four years to beat you. Someone can take the world record from you any time.”

And that’s exactly what he did last night in New York. Congratulations to Usain Bolt on becoming the fastest man in the world!
