Dallas County, Texas and Dallas, Georgia named after a Jamaican citizen!
The story begins when George Dallas’ father, Alexander James Dallas is born to Robert and Sarah Dallas in 1759 in Kingston, Jamaica. Alexander lives in Jamaica until he’s 5 and then returns in 1780 after he marries and is admitted to the Jamaican bar. Due to his wife’s deteriorating health they relocated to the States in 1785 where he resumed his career as a lawyer and later went on to help form the Democratic Republican Party. Alexander’s son George Mifflin is born in 1792 and served as mayor of Philadelphia and ultimately became the 11th Vice President of the United States, under James Polk. Mifflin died in 1864 and Dallas County, Texas and Dallas, Georgia were named in his honor. I’ve lived in Texas my whole life and spent 20 years of my life in Dallas and I never once ever heard of Dallas County, Texas or Dallas, Georgia being named after a Jamaican citizen, but it’s true. Now I know why I love JA, I live in a Jamaican county!
