Founder of Island Records and heavyweight producer of some of the greatest reggae acts of all time, Chris Blackwell, recently participated in the Mayberry Monthly Forum on Investment at the Knutsford Court Hotel. When asked about his sentiments on Jamaican music and its current state, Blackwell replied that, “I believe that the golden age of Jamaican music is definitely behind us, I really do believe that.” You can check out the entire interview here.
I understand Mr. Blackwell’s sentiments and can even agree with them to a certain point, but just as with all things in life, reggae music will always continue to evole and expand. Therefore, what may seem to have been the golden age to one group of listeners, will merely be an era of a different sound to another. I personally believe it’s all in the eyes of the beholder, but there is definitely no doubt that reggae is not what it used to be, for better and for worse.
Do you think the golden age has passed for reggae music? Do you believe that reggae music can re-establish itself as the genre of days gone by? And if so, do you believe that it should turn back to its roots?

Yes! Mr. Blackwell is totally correct!! The golden age of reggae has certainly passed. Most of what passes for reggae today is extremely, extremely mediocre on various levels.
