My name is Tremaya Reynolds aka MrsYFA, and I am the creator and owner of YawdFromAbroad.com. I created YawdFromAbroad for a number of reasons, the main one being because I was having to search too many different places for information on Jamaican entertainment and news. I wanted a place that I could go to and would be able to find what I was looking for and if that site didn’t have it, it could link me to the one that did. Basically I wanted someone to scour the web for all things Jamaican for me….didn’t quite work out that way, because now I’m doing that for you! :)

The personal reasons I created YawdFromAbroad are:
#1 Jamaica is my passion, I love it with everything in me and I wanted to create a testament to that love
#2 I love to write but couldn’t find that spark that would inspire me until I realized I could write all day, everyday about Jamaica
#3 To inform people that Jamaica is about more than the stereotypical images of weed, gangstas, crime, and sex
#4 I wanted to learn even more about Jamaica, and what better way to do this than to have to put in work and research every day

I first discovered Jamaican culture while attending the University of Houston where I was a member of a several Caribbean organizations and became heavily active in the Jamaican community in Houston. It was then that I began to visit JA at least once a year, which I still do today. In between being forced to watch Dancehall Queen a million times by my best friend (the only part I understood at the time was when she going off because they didn’t save her “not even a likkle piece of chicken” from KFC), going to the dancehall, festivals, community events and reggae concerts regularly, it’s a miracle I even graduated!

When I’m not working on the site I’m working as a licensed financial professional, advancing my freelance writing career, taking care of my famliy, head first in a good book, (I am addicted to books (so if you have any suggestions please let a sista know), watching reality TV, or spending time with family and friends in Dallas, Houston, or St.Mary, Jamaica.

For the record, I’m not Jamaican (but my husband is) and I don’t pretend to be, I’m just me: A southern girl who loves JA. Jamaica is not a tourist destination for me it’s my second home and what I’m doing here is not some random hobby, it’s been my way of life for many years. I am very familiar with the joys and struggles in Jamaica because I have family and friends there that are in it, and I’ve even had to go through my own struggles with the powers that be, so please don’t discount my dedication. I am very serious about what I do here, so please let my work speak for itself and judge it accordingly. Thank you for your support and I do welcome any and all positive feedback and inquires at:MrsYFA@gmail.com.

Thanks for visiting mi yawd and spread the word! :)

Hey Esteban,
Thanks for the encouragement. I welcome any suggestions or story ideas. I have a step-daughter in Islington and Port Maria is a regular stomping ground for me when I’m in JA (it’s the largest city near to my mother-in-law).. I love the view when driving in from the direction of Ochi to Port Maria. It’s one of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve ever seen.

P.S. I’d like to know the history/meaning behind your name…e-mail me! :)

I love what you are doing. My grandparents are West Indian, so I have a deep love for the culture!!! I went to Jamaica for Christmas for the first time (MoBay)! And I am going back at the end of February (Negril)! So I guess I fell in love with Jamaica as well. I was blessed to be raised in a heavily populated Jamaican, Barbadian, Grenadian etc community in Brooklyn, so going to your site is very comforting. There aren’t too many out there like your page.

Please keep doing what you do!! Thank you for letting me share!
