Longchase, it is good to know that during the recent bloody and violent upheavals post the controversial elections in your homeland of Kenya, that reggae artists were the first to send messages and exhortations of peace and unity.Hopefully, the tenuous peace will hold in Kenya, and it is good to know that reggae was somewhat instrumental in that regard.Paradoxically, in some quarters, especially, the home of reggae,Jamaica, there are individuals including myself, who are of the perspective that certain genres of reggae,i.e., dancehall, and certain purveyors of this genre by way of the caustic, scathing, biting, turbulent and murderous lyrics extol the values, psychology and sociology of gangsterism, which has influenced many young Jamaicans who are impressionable and easily influenced by such lyrical messages.Hence, the high incidence of violence extant in Jamaica today.Having articulated this position, let me categorically state that this genre of music is not the sole cause of violence and nihilism in Jamaica. The causes of violence in Jamaican society, as in Kenya are multifaceted involving, politics, economics, social class, education or the lack thereof, tribalism, inter alia.Wishing you the best when you do visit Jamaica to attend the 2008 Reggae Sumfest with its star studded list of reggae artists.RESPECT!!
Longchase,
Thanks for visiting! I’m so glad reggae has been able to quell the violence and help unite people in Africa! There is power in positivity!
