They say there’s a first time for everything, and Boston native Michelle Young recently proved that dancehall is no exception.  The 23 year-old American dancer won the internationally coveted “Dancehall Queen” title on this past Monday in Montego Bay, Jamaica after competing against 30 other contestants from all over the world; making Michelle Young the first American to win the title in it’s 11 year history. Second runner-up went to fellow American, Molika Stapley, and third place was won by Japanese contender, Nami Crissy Kerisu. After winning, Young was quoted as saying, “I have never been this happy in my entire life”…”I am going to cherish this moment for the rest of my life-I am on top  of the world.” Wow, who’d of that the competition would have no Jamaican winners…in the words of my mother, times are surely changing. Check out Michelle accepting her award to Chevelle Franklin’s hit single, “Dancehall Queen”, here.

(I’m attempting to set-up an interview with the new Dancehall Queen to see how she got her start in the dancehall and to see what future goals she has for herself both in and out of the dancehall arena…I’ll keep you posted on the interview developments)
